Trees surround the property. Hills are visible in the background. "The church was originally built in 1889 for Mrs. Alexander Campbell-Johnston in memory of her late husband. It was designed by Architect Ernest Coxhead and was built in a style reminiscent of a church that Mrs. Campbell-Johnston remembered from her native Scotland. "Church of the Angels is located on Avenue 64 and Church Street, Highland Park. The story of how a charming stone Victorian church came to stand on what was once a Spanish land grant goes something like this: In 1798 land was granted to Jose Maria Verdugo, an area encompassing thousands of acres of what we now call Pasadena and Burbank. It was known then as Rancho San Rafael. The Verdugos prospered; the land was handed down to children and children's children. But the prosperity passed and hard times forced descendants of Jose Maria to sell much of the land. In 1869 a man named Prudent Beaudry lived up to his name by gaining several thousand acres of Rancho San Rafael in a loan forfeiture. He went on to become mayor of Los Angeles in 1874. About a decade later, a British diplomat named Alexander Robert Campbell-Johnson visited Southern California. He must have liked what he saw, because in 1883 he and his wife, Frances, purchased 2,000 acres from Beaudry. Johnston Lake in Garvanza

Photograph of Johnston Lake on the Campbell-Johnston ranch in Garvanza, ca.1900. Oak branches reach from the right to the left in the foreground, partially obscuring the view of the lake beyond. The water is calm and smooth and it reflects much of the landscape around it. There is a small dirt peninsula jutting out into the lake at center, and on it is the stump of a tree. "El Alisal" in Garvanza

Photograph of the two-story stone house of Charles F. Lummis, "El Alisal", ca.1898-1910. A man and a woman stand facing each other near a door at right. The wooden main door at left bears a decorative initial "CFL". A few trees can be seen towering behind the house. The house was build by Lummis with the help of a 12-year-old Indian boy in the Highland Park area of Los Angeles. Lummis was born at Lynn, Massachusettes in 1859 and died in 1928. He founded the Southwest Museum (Los Angeles) and had an enduring interest in the American southwest and Indians in particular. He was city librarian, 1905-1910. He founded the magazine "Land of Sunshine" later called "Out West".

USC College of Fine Arts

Photograph of the College of Fine Arts building at the University of Southern California (U.S.C.), Garvanza, Los Angeles, ca.1900. The two-story building has extended eaves, rectangular windows, ornamental arched curves below the roofs, and a covered balcony on the second floor. Walls made of stone masonry surround the lower portion of the building. Another stone wall separates the street, littered with rocks, from the building's yard. Streetcar rails line the dirt road in front of the building.

The building was later replaced in 1923 by the present Gothic structure designed by George Lindsey. This building was an excellent example of Mission Revival architecture. It features multicurved parapets, arched and semi-circular windows, and an arcade. A bell tower is visible (center left). The lawn in front is well manicured.

Pacific Electric Bridge across the Arroyo Seco in Garvanza

Photograph of the Pacific Electric Bridge across the Arroyo Seco, near the University of Southern California College of Fine Arts in Garvanza (later Highland Park), 1907. The college, which can be seen to the right of the railroad tracks headed across the bridge, was founded by William Lees Judson in 1901. There are two sets of train tracks leading up to and crossing the bridge, along with two rows of poles to support the overhead wires needed to run the electric trains. Despite the name of the river, its banks are lush with foliage, including several large trees. A simple ranch house can be seen on the left side of the picture, and the tracks intersect a street in the foreground.

Occidental College in Highland Park

The Hall of Letters building has a portico entrance and twin ornamental pediments situated at the ends of the building's façade. The Stimson Library has dome turret-like tower. The Academy building has a portico entrance and similar features as the Hall of Letters building. Above the main gable is a square tower. The dirt road (foreground) appears to be muddy and has deep tracks embedded in it. Streetcar tracks line the road.

Chas. M. Stimson Library on the Occidental College Highland Park Campus

Photograph of the Chas. M. Stimson Library, built in 1904 on the Occidental College Highland Park Campus, Los Angeles, ca.1908. The two-story building has an extended porch where above it is a pediment displaying the name of the building. Multifoil tracery outline the windows the walls. Above the roof is a turret-like tower. A stone masonry wall creates a perimeter around the front yard. Heavy tracks line the dirt road in front of the building. After the College moved to its present campus in Eagle Rock in 1914 the Library building was used for a short time as a Los Angeles City Branch Library. The building has since been demolished.

Frances De Pauw Industrial School

Photograph of an external view of the Frances De Pauw Industrial School, Los Angeles, ca.1910. This federal-style building stands about two-stories tall. The roof of the portico entrance also serves as a balcony. The sign above the portico reads: "Frances DePauw Industrial School". The windows are symmetric in numbers, however they are not symmetric in shapes. The first floor of the building is constructed of shingles, while the second half is made of brick. Residential buildings are visible in neighboring yards. The lawn is well manicured. The grass near the street, where the utility poles lined up, has not been groomed.

Church of the Angels in Garvanza

The stone building can be seen at center with a large, sloping roof and a belltower with a clock on it at center. Three arches can be seen on the building at right, while a smaller building appears to be attached to the church to the right. A dirt road leads to the church at right, while trees, bushes, and palms can be seen to the left in the yard. Vines are visible growing on the left side of the church, while hills are visible in the background.

Photograph of the Garvanza School in Garvanza (later Highland Park), Los Angeles, 1910. The two-story wooden structure has a square tower which rises to a point directly over the main entry on the corner. A small group of about 15 children stand on the steps below. Part of the building is obscured by tall trees along the dirt street in the foreground. A man and boy stand on the dirt embankment which serves as a curb. Thick bushes also run along the side of the school.

USC College of Fine Arts Building

Photograph of the Professor Judson's College of Fine Arts building at the University of Southern California (U.S.C.), Garvanza, Los Angeles, ca.1910. The two-story building has extended eaves, rectangular windows, ornamental arched curves below the roofs, and a covered balcony on the second floor. Walls, made of stone masonry, surround the lower portion of the building. A seal, attached to the side of the building, reads: "the Los Angeles College of Fine Arts, U.S.C.". In the center of the seal is a figure of a Greek man. The lawn is covered with thick grass. Several bushes and several trees can be seen scattered across the lawn.

The station is a two-story building at left, and the railway can be seen at right. The station is a Spanish-style building with several large archways and a small wooden balcony on the second floor. A concrete sidewalk encircles the building, and a dirt road runs in front of it. Several people can be seen between the station and a railway car at center. The car is Number Two, and is named Virginia.

Monte Vista School visitors

Photograph of Monte Vista School visitors, ca.1911. Four visitors to the Monte Vista School can be seen standing near open double doors: John Frances, Superintendent of Schools in 1911; Edwin Markham, poet; Susan M. Dorsey, Superintendent later in 1924; and M.C. Bettinger, Acting Superintendent in 1911. The visitors are shown with principal Miss Mary Murphy, who can be seen standing near the double doors. All the gentemen shown wear suit jackets and slacks. The women wear long skirts with buttoned blouses, and the woman at right wears a decorative hat. Three matts can be seen placed along the floor.

Photographic portrait of Charles F. Lummis and President Theodore Roosevelt in Highland Park, Los Angeles, 1912. Lummis can be seen standing left, while former President Roosevelt can be seen at right. They are visible on the steps of the Hall of Letters Building at Occidental College's Highland Park Campus during Roosevelt's visit to the campus. Both men carry their hats in their hands, although Lummis has folded his flat, while Roosevelt is holding his only by the brim. The former President wears a suit with a dark, long-tailed coat. Lumis is pictured in profile looking directly at him. Lumis is also dressed in a dark suit, although he is sporting a jacket without tails. The walls of the brick Hall of Letters Building are visible behind them.

Two trolley cars move along their tracks in the center of the street while a group of pedestrians await their arrival just off the sidewalk to the left, next to a horse-drawn carriage. Two-story shopfronts line the left side of the street, extending their cloth canopies over the sidewalk. The Romanesque architecture of the bank can be seen at right, with the word "Bank" inscribed on its window. Utility poles support the web of trolley car cables that stretches above the scene.

Photographic portrait of "Pioneer Mother" Sarah Ann Rogers and her seven (eight?) children, Highland Park, Los Angeles, January 30, 1916. Mrs. Rogers is pictured seated at right in a button-down dress, on which a flower corsage is pinned. She wears her hair back and wears glasses. A full-grown man with a moustache rests his hand on the back of her chair, while four others stand to the left of him: a young woman, a man with a moustache connected to his muttonchops, and two more young women. In the first row, to the left of Mrs. Rogers, three children are pictured: two adolescent girls and a young boy, who appears to have a tin of something tucked-away on the inside of his jacket. Picture file card reads "Ralph, Center, Edward, Right."

Church of the Angels

Photograph of an exterior view of the Church of the Angels, ca.1920. The stone building has a tall, pointed steeple with a cross on top. What appears to be a clock is visible on the side of the steeple, while an arch can be seen at left. Foliage can be seen in front of the building, while a pond can be seen in the foreground. Tall trees tower above the church in the background and at right. Originally built in 1889 for Mrs. Alexander Campbell-Johnston in memory of her late husband. It was designed by Architect Ernest Coxhead and was built in a style reminiscent of a church that Mrs. Campbell-Johnston remembered from her native Scotland.

Ancient Tree in Sycamore Grove

Photograph of an ancient sycamore tree in Highland Park's Sycamore Grove, ca.1920. There are actually three tree trunks growing from a single spot in the foreground on the right side of the image; they reach up past the top edge. There is a sign that says "No Ball Playing" posted on the trunk furthest to the left. In the grass on the left side of the image two people are lying on their stomachs in the shade, reading. There are several more trees behind a low wall of plants in the background.

Mission Oak on Padre's Trail

Photograph of the Mission Oak on Padre's Trail in Highland Park, Los Angeles, ca.1920. The street is paved and lined to either side by sidewalk, yet the thick, gnarled tree in the middle of the street has been allowed to stay, surrounded by a short concrete enclosure at its base. An automobile is parked facing the camera to the left, while the trees along the sidewalk obscure the houses in the background. The tree, also called "Padre's Tree" was a place of rest and refreshment for travelers between the San Gabriel and San Fernando Missions. It was located in the center of Avenue 63 between York Boulevard and Garvanza Avenue. The tree died and was removed sometime prior to World War II.

Southwest Museum in Highland Park

It is a tall, light-colored structure with a rectangular tower at right and rows of arch-shaped windows along the walls. In the foreground, the tops of many trees can be see. Two small houses can be seen near the edge of the trees in the foreground. Compares to CHS-36391, which shows a very similar scene.

In the extreme background at left, a series of trees can be seen near a line of utility poles. At least two automobiles can be seen parked along the curve. Photoprint reads: "Looking southwest from the intersection of Aldama Street and Buchanan Street, during the rain of Feb. 4, 1931. This condition will be corrected by the Annandale Boulevard and York Boulevard Storm Drain System".
