Pass School Students at Sunset and Gordon

The teacher was Mary L. Gower. The one-story clapboard-sided school bears the sign "The Pass School" and under that "1894". A short flight of stairs lead up to the front entry. Dummy Railroad Line

Two men in suits lean against the passenger car to the left, which is filled with passengers, while a third man also leans further down the car. Two more civilians and the conductor are seated and standing at the connection point between the locomotive engine and the passenger car. The engineer, who was employed by the RR for 18 years, is pictured standing just outside the engine's cabin. The seats inside the passenger car appear to be unsecured regular wooden chairs. The engineer's brother was also employed for 16 years as a fireman.

Ireby Barrow Ranch in Hollywood

Old Los Feliz School

The top level of the tower is an open deck, and the roof of the tower is onion-shaped. A tall flagpole stands on the roof at left and a large flag flies from it. The main entrance to the school is at left and consists of a stairway leading up to a covered porch. The windows of the school are tall and rectangular, and they are very close together at right. There is a hill in the background, and a low wooden fence is in the foreground.

The Hoegee Residence, East Hollywood

Photograph of the Hoegee residence in East Hollywood, ca.1904. The three-story house sits on top of a hill. Stairs made of stone bricks lead visitors from the clean driveway up through the decorated and well-manicured courtyard and eventually to the house. The house features a large semicircular balcony that also serves as a porch or an arcade for the lower floor. It is possibly the main entrance. A large American flag waves above the façade of the house.

Immaculate Heart College

The three-story mission-style building features multicurved parapets, arched windows, several arcades, and dormer windows. About a dozen young trees are planted in the well-maintained yard. The dirt road in the foreground is lined with streetcar rails. "Immaculate Heart High School was founded in 1906 by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a Catholic religious order of women who trace their origin to Olot, Spain, where they were founded by Father Masmitja de Puig in 1848. The sisters opened Cathedral School in Los Angeles in 1886. This became the first parochial school in the city. The sisters later purchased a fifteen-acre plot of land for $10,000 in the Hollywood Hills at Western and Franklin Avenues where they built a convent and a high school with boarding facilities. Transportation for students in the early 1900s consisted of wagons on dirt roads. During this time Western Avenue changed from a rutted wagon road to a major artery, Los Feliz from a cow path to a boulevard, and the surrounding olive and orange groves yielded first to California bungalows, then to apartment structures and business and industrial complexes. The school was originally called Immaculate Heart College, even though it began as a high school. The College portion opened in the following decade." -- unknown author.
