1956, Donkey gets booked into Ann Street Shelter

"Photograph caption dated April 20, 1956 reads, 'He got lost in the Hollywood Hills and wandered into the streets; officer Tom Teter led him to jail. Two Hollywood radio car officers admittedly felt like donkeys earlier today as they led a burro down the main stem of the film capital, but they were only doing their duty. Officers Dave Tutor and Ed Allen captured the animal as it roamed through the Hollywood Hills at Beachwood Drive near Glen Oak Drive. Naturally, the beast refused to ride in a patrol wagon. So the officers were forced to hike more than two miles to the station house, dragging their burro behind them. After 'booking' at the jail, the burro was ordered held for the Ann Street Animal Shelter where his owner may claim him. The burro was believed to have been used to pull a plow on a lot-leveling project on the hillside.'"

"Two-year -old Steve Rodriguez got an early Christmas present yesterday, and a warm, furry one at that, thanks to the Tailwaggers Foundation of America and Mercy Crusade. The two non-profit groups sponsored a "bailout" party for more than 200 animals, paying all costs for them to get new homes. Steve and his dad, Manuel, rescued their 8-week-old German shepherd from the Ann Street city shelter" (1981).
